  • Overview

    Technicolor’s Production Services division incorporates a number of visual effects and production companies – The Mill, MPC, Mr X and Mikros.   This role is to predominantly support The Mill and MPC.

    The role will report into the GC of Production Services, Hunter Simon, based in LA.  On a day-to-basis, you will work closely with the production companies’ Managing Directors, Commercial Managers, CFO and Executive Producers.  You will attend senior management meetings and you will also be responsible for training the newly qualified, Legal Counsel, who will support your role.

    The role will work across The Mill and MPC’s UK and US offices, although the role will be based in London.  As a member of the London legal team, you will sit within the production companies and act as a legal business partner, taking a proactive role on supporting projects, working closely with internal stakeholders and delivering commercial solutions.


    • Working closely with Production to draft and negotiate production services agreements with brands and agencies for live action shoots and post-production/visual effects services, to ensure strong commercial terms. This will involve responsibility and advice on IP, clearance, compliance and copyright matters to ensure all content is cleared for release into the public domain. 
    • Working closely with emerging technology teams within Production to negotiate and draft development agreements and statements of work for app, website and virtual reality experiences for both agencies, but more commonly, brands direct. You will be responsible for guiding and supporting the Production teams throughout the process from pre-production/concept stages to release into the public domain – this will involve advising on risks associated with use of third party and open source software; software and maintenance considerations; strong understanding of IP and ownership of source code and proprietary assets; plus, responsibility for copyright clearance matters. 
    • Working closely with Production to ensure strong licensing terms of any IP developed inhouse, namely original character designs; unique visual effect environments; proprietary software and technology; or any inventions and patents.
    • Working closely with Production on creative and strategic partnership relationships with brands and drafting strong commercial terms.
    • Assisting Production and commercial teams with inventive ideas and liaising with Technicolor patent teams to assess novelty and inventiveness.
    • Advising on litigious matters, including trade mark infringements and third-party claims, debt recovery, and managing of external lawyers.
    • Responsibility for ensuring precedent agreements and guidance notes are up-to-date, together with assistance from the junior legal counsel.
    • Training and providing seminars to Production teams on key issues to look out for in their creation of content, whether in a broadcasting or tech platform.


    • UK LLB or US equivalent, with strong training in a reputable law firm. Subsequent experience inhouse in fast-paced, high volume environment.
    • You will be able to demonstrate a high level of legal technical skills coupled with commercial approach.
    • Expertise in IP, media and commercial law essential. Production experience preferred.
    • Knowledge of PACT, APA, AICP, CAP code and UK OFCOM broadcasting code preferred.
    • Understanding of union relationships when engaging talent on a production.
    • Ability to stay calm when dealing with multiple stakeholders, many of whom have different objectives, on urgent matters.
    • Ability to adapt advice based on ‘audience’, i.e. junior producer versus managing director.
    • Positive, confident, ‘can do’ approach.
    • Team player.
